What is a burn ban?

A burn ban is a legal order that prohibits open burning in a specific area. It is issued by a county judge, a parish government, a fire chief, a state forester, or in some states a governor. It typically prohibits outdoor fires, brush burning, and trash burning — cooking fires and permitted campfires are usually exempt but rules vary by jurisdiction.

Is there a burn ban near me right now?

Is a Red Flag Warning the same as a burn ban?

No. A Red Flag Warning is a National Weather Service product describing dangerous fire weather (dry, windy, hot). A burn ban is a legal order. Only the legal order changes what you may lawfully burn. On this site, NWS overlays use a distinct violet colour and never change a county's legal status. See About the data for the distinction.

What if my county is greyed out on the map?

Grey means we do not yet track that state — not that no burn ban exists. We currently track 47 states, listed on the States we track page. Additional states join as source access is resolved. Grey is never a legal opinion.
